Complemento directo e indirecto

From verb structure to object pronouns: CD, CI, pronoun order and pronoun position.

Understand the relationship first. Choose the pronoun second.
1 · Starting point

How many elements can a verb have?

Only the action

Duermo.
I sleep.
The verb does not take an object.

Verb + one element

Como una manzana.
I eat an apple.
Something is directly connected to the action.

Verb + two elements

Te doy un libro.
I give you a book.
A thing is given, and a person receives it.
2 · Verb types

Transitive vs. intransitive verbs

Verbo transitivo

can take a CD
Como una manzana.
Leo un libro.
Veo a María.

Verbo intransitivo

cannot take a CD
Duermo.
Llego a casa.
Voy a Madrid.
Important: a phrase after a verb is not automatically a direct object. In Voy a Madrid, a Madrid is not a CD.
3 · Complemento directo

What is the CD?

The complemento directo is the person or thing directly connected to a transitive verb.

Como la manzana.
→ La como.
Veo a María.
→ La veo.
Compro los libros.
→ Los compro.

A useful test

lo · la · los · las
If the element can be replaced by one of these pronouns, it is normally a CD.
Do not confuse a with CI: Veo a María → La veo. The personal a can introduce a CD.
4 · Complemento indirecto

What is the CI?

The complemento indirecto typically indicates the person who receives, benefits from, or is affected by the action.

Doy un libro a María.
→ Le doy un libro.
Escribo un correo a mis profesores.
→ Les escribo un correo.
CI → me · te · le · nos · os · les
5 · A familiar structure

Why le gusta?

A María / Le gusta el chocolate.

a María / le

CI
the person affected by the experience

el chocolate

Subject
this controls singular/plural agreement
Therefore: Le gusta el chocolate / Le gustan los chocolates. We do not say lo/la gusta.
6 · Pronoun system

CD and CI pronouns

PersonCDCI
yomeme
tútete
él / ella / ustedlo / lale
nosotros/asnosnos
vosotros/asosos
ellos / ellas / ustedeslos / lasles
The clearest difference appears in the third person: lo / la / los / las for CD vs. le / les for CI.
7 · Two objects

When CD and CI appear together

Doy el libro a María.
el libro = CD → lo
a María = CI → le
Pronoun order: CI + CD
CI + CD + VERB
8 · Third person

le / les becomes se

Le lo doy.
→ Se lo doy.
Le doy el libro. → Se lo doy.
Les doy las llaves. → Se las doy.
Me da el libro. → Me lo da.
Te envío la foto. → Te la envío.
Precise rule: le / les → se before lo / la / los / las.
9 · Pronoun position

Where do object pronouns go?

A. Before a conjugated verb

Se lo doy.
Te la envío.
The pronouns are written separately from the conjugated verb.

B. Attached to an infinitive or gerund

Voy a dárselo.
Estoy dándoselo.
The pronouns are attached to the end of the verb.
With two pronouns, the order is always CI + CD.
10 · Infinitive

Conjugated verb + infinitive

Voy a explicar el problema a Ana.

Before the conjugated verb

Se lo voy a explicar.

Attached to the infinitive

Voy a explicárselo.
Both versions are correct. The two pronouns move together as a block.
11 · Gerund

Conjugated verb + gerund

Estoy explicando el problema a Ana.

Before the conjugated verb

Se lo estoy explicando.

Attached to the gerund

Estoy explicándoselo.
Not: Estoy se lo explicando. Keep the pronouns together.
12 · Written accents

Why do accents sometimes appear?

When pronouns are attached to an infinitive or gerund, a written accent may be necessary to preserve the original stress.

Infinitive

comprar + lo → comprarlo
comprar + se + lo → comprárselo
explicar + se + lo → explicárselo

Gerund

explicando + lo → explicándolo
explicando + se + lo → explicándoselo
The accent is not decorative: it keeps the original stressed syllable in the correct place.
