Talking about frequency in Spanish
Spanish has several words and expressions to describe how often something happens. The scale below goes from the lowest frequency to the highest.
nunca means that something does not happen at all.
casi nunca means that it happens, but very rarely.
de vez en cuando means “from time to time”.
muy de vez en cuando means “very occasionally”, so the frequency is lower.
These two expressions have very similar meanings. In many contexts, both can be translated as “sometimes” or “from time to time”.
These expressions can be understood as a simple progression:
This means every day. It refers directly to a daily frequency.
This means always. It emphasizes that something happens every time or in every relevant situation.
Spanish can also express frequency in a more precise way by saying how many times something happens.
| Spanish | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| una vez al día | once a day | Hago ejercicio una vez al día. |
| dos veces al día | twice a day | Reviso el correo dos veces al día. |
| una vez a la semana | once a week | Voy al cine una vez a la semana. |
| tres veces a la semana | three times a week | Voy al gimnasio tres veces a la semana. |
| una vez al mes | once a month | Voy de excursión una vez al mes. |
| dos veces al mes | twice a month | Veo a mis amigos dos veces al mes. |
Frequency expressions can appear in different positions. At this level, these two patterns are especially useful.
