El imperativo

Today we are going to learn a new verb mood in Spanish: el imperativo.

We use the imperative to tell or ask another person to do something.
Come. — Eat.
Espera. — Wait.
Mira. — Look.
Escucha. — Listen.

Important: the imperative is a mood, not a tense.

Who are we speaking to?

The imperative is directed at the listener.

Who?Spanish
one person, informaltú
one person, formalusted
several people, informalvosotros / vosotras
several peopleustedes

There is no “yo” imperative. We do not give an order to ourselves as the speaker.

In this unit, we focus on the forms used to address other people directly.

What do we use it for?

1. Recommendations and advice

Ponte protector solar.
Camina 30 minutos al día.
Haz deporte tres veces a la semana.

2. Instructions

Ponte la mascarilla.
Espera dos horas.
Lávate bien la cara.

Imperative does not always sound like an order. It is also very common in advice, recipes, instructions and health recommendations.

Tú · regular forms

A very useful shortcut:

tú present − final -s = imperative
PresentImperative
compras→compra
comes→come
vives→vive

For regular verbs, this rule is simple and reliable.

Tú · stem-changing verbs

If the present tense changes the stem, the tú imperative keeps that change.

PresentImperative
piensas→piensa
duermes→duerme
pides→pide

Think of the same shortcut: present tú − s.

Tú · important irregular forms

These forms must be memorised.

poner → pon

tener → ten

ser → sé

salir → sal

hacer → haz

venir → ven

ir → ve

decir → di

ven · di · sal · haz · ten · ve · pon · sé

Vosotros / vosotras

Another very simple rule:

infinitive: -r → -d
InfinitiveImperative
comprar→comprad
comer→comed
vivir→vivid

Just replace the final -r of the infinitive with -d.

Usted / ustedes

Change the final vowel.

-AR verbs

a → e

compra → compre

compran → compren

-ER / -IR verbs

e → a

come → coma

viven → vivan

For now, focus on the form. We will connect these forms with the subjunctive later.

Regular imperative · full table

COMPRAR COMER VIVIR
tú compra come vive
vosotros/as comprad comed vivid
usted compre coma viva
ustedes compren coman vivan

Three key shortcuts: tú = present − s · vosotros = infinitive − r + d · usted/ustedes = opposite final vowel.

Imperative + pronouns

With the affirmative imperative, pronouns go after the verb.

Normal sentence

Lo compras.

Te lavas.

Affirmative imperative

Cómpralo.

Lávate.

imperative + pronoun = ONE WORD
compra + lo → cómpralo
lava + te → lávate
explica + me + lo → explícamelo

Why do accent marks appear?

When pronouns are attached, the word becomes longer. An accent mark may be needed to keep the original stressed syllable.

lava → lávate

LA-va

LÁ-va-te

compra → cómpralo

COM-pra

CÓM-pra-lo

The accent mark is not decorative. It preserves the correct stress.

Vosotros + os: the final -d disappears: lavad + os → lavaos.

Quick practice · Give advice

Use the affirmative imperative.

1. dormir · tú
duerme
2. hacer · tú
haz
3. comer · vosotros/as
comed
4. vivir · usted
viva

Now use these forms to give health advice: Duerme más. Haz ejercicio. Come bien. Bebe agua.
